[YouTube-API] Space in youtube usernames - API bug?

Hi all,

Since google+, users can have spaces in their username, but it seems so, that the API can't handle it (cannot process a given username with a space in it).

Is there a way to bypass this? I know there is the user_id, but we're dealing with user input, so username is kind of the only ooption...
