I'm not quite familiar with the Java and .NET GData APIs. However, there should be a possibility to increase the default chunk size (10 MB). This size is NOT appropriate for users with very fast upload internet connections! It's in fact too small.
Some Data:
Chunk size 3MB: => max 300 kb/s
Chunk size 10MB => max 700kb/s
(700kb/s is my maximum upload speed)
Why these differences:
Every chunk that is uploaded requires a request to the server, every request needs time and that slows down the upload.
Increasing the size of a chunk leads to reducing the needed number of requests to complete an upload and improves your overall upload speed.
Give it a try and post your results.

Dennis Fischer

What I forgot to mention was that on the very same systems uploading to youtube to the website in the browser is 10 - 20 times faster (40 - 80 mbit/s), so it's definitely not the internet connection causing the slow down.--
